ドイツの化学者フリードリヒ・ヴィルヘルム・オストワルト（オストヴァルト）が提唱した色彩体系オストワルト・システムを具体化した一冊。944の着脱可能なカラーチップをリング綴じのシートに収めている。本書はカラーチップが六角形になった第3版（初版と第2版のカラーチップは正方形）。外見は持ち手のついたレザーバッグ。ファスナーを開いてバッグを開くと...カラーチップが現れるという仕掛けになっている。
